They say you can’t fight fire with fire. So what happens when the slow burn of Mother Root Ginger reaches the Dragons’ Den? With our episode airing next week, our Founder Bethan and COO Alice explain what the experience was really like for them.

Preparing for Our Dragons' Den Pitch

The application required us to submit a pitch. Looking back, our first version was far too formal - we tried to sound like what we thought we should be. Over time, we refined it, bringing out more of our authentic story while still balancing commercial points.

We practiced countless times, went through 10+ iterations, and even had to adjust slightly on the day after some feedback. Preparing felt like studying for an exam, but it paid off when we finally stepped in front of the Dragons.

Behind the Set Design

Once selected, contestants are asked to design their set. We wanted ours to feel unmistakably Mother Root without leaning on obvious branding.

Our friend, architect Abby Bird, helped us create a beautiful bar, props like a garland of ginger and a striking sculpture. It was a huge logistical effort to transport everything, but when we saw it on TV, it was worth every second.

Family Support and Sacrifices

Throughout the process, our families were incredibly supportive. [Bethan] My husband, who I often call “my poor husband”, picked up the slack at home while I prepared. It really did feel like studying for an A-level exam: memorising numbers, anticipating questions, all while running the business and closing a fundraising round.

Deciding What to Wear in The Den

We had big ideas of being sponsored for our outfits, but in the end, we wore what we already owned - comfortable and on-brand. Hair and makeup were done on set, which felt a little unnatural for us, but necessary for TV.

How It Felt and What Happened After

Were we happy with the outcome? Absolutely. The experience gave us confidence, validated our direction, and helped us believe even more in what we’re building at a time we were still probably still second guessing ourselves. However, you'll have to watch on the night to find out what really happened with the Dragons.

After filming, we celebrated with sushi and wine back in London, though we were completely exhausted. The next day we launched a new product, so there wasn’t much time to relax.

How Mother Root Has Grown Since Dragons' Den

Since our appearance we've launched a limited edition Rhubarb alongside our original Ginger and have some exciting new flavours currently in development. We’ve grown from just two people to twelve, with plans to more or less double again soon. We’re also expanding internationally, testing the US market and moving beyond online into wider distribution. With growth comes new challenges - leadership responsibilities, growing pains and learning to let go.

Advice for Future Dragons' Den Contestants

Do it! It’s scary but worth it. Know your numbers, tell your story clearly and film behind-the-scenes because you’ll forget details. Eat breakfast. And don’t be afraid to lean into controversy or hot takes - it makes better TV.

The episode airs next Thursday, so tune in at 8pm on BBC One to see how Bethan and Alice fare against The Dragons. We’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes updates on out socials, so make sure you’re following our Instagram and Tik Tok
